Work
Projects from industry roles, university, my product business and personal builds. The four main case studies come first, followed by the rest from newest to oldest.
- Wheel roundness measuring deviceFinds hidden wheel flats in about seven minutes, with one person and the wheelset still on the train.

- Drill cabin window guardRedesigned so drill operators can see their work, while keeping falling-object protection to AS ISO 3449.

- DSLR film scanning systemStarted as a stand for my own negatives and grew into a complete scanning kit. More than 1,000 units sold, about 500 of them full kits.

- Adjustable channel drain conceptsTwo concepts that set a channel drain to the required fall without the wobble of four-point levelling. Presented to EVERHARD’s CEO and department heads after a three-day design task.

- Energy management system deliverySchedules, requirements and test scripts for Newmont’s ISO 50001 energy platform, including a data check that caught fuel volumes reading low.
- Wireless tyre temperature sensorA self-powered sensor for each wheel well that reads the temperature across the tyre tread and sends it to a phone. The parts are chosen and a first board layout fits a 26 mm tube.

- Dual-arm SCARA pen plotterA desk-sized plotter that writes a QR code and message at the flip of a switch. Version 3 adds a planetary stage to remove the backlash of low-cost motors.

- Roam ReelA puck-sized fishing hand reel that doubles as the tackle box. The final version is printed, field-tested and catching fish.

- CAPEX project controlsKept the capital works program at Harmony’s Hidden Valley gold mine funded, scheduled and reported, across every department and up to executive level.
- Generator start-up surge fixTraced a start-up surge on new Cummins generators to a resonance between the throttle controller and its mounting bracket, then fixed it in the field and at the factory.

- TriFold tripodA 50 g tripod that stays screwed to the camera, with three ball-jointed legs that fold flat. Patent lodged, sold to friends and family and placed fourth in UQ Ventures.

- Borehole camera and lighting carriageGave a coal mine’s borehole camera the light it needed to survey the mine before re-entry. The footage showed the mine in worse condition than expected.

- Bucket wheel excavator prototypeWon a field of about 15 first-year teams, moving more than 6 kg of rice in five minutes against about 2 kg for the runner-up.

Smaller personal projects are in the workshop.
